The second person will be up on the roof (or wherever you plan to mount the outside antenna) and will be aiming the outside antenna. If it’s a directional inside antenna, be sure that the front of the antenna is aimed directly at the phone(s). away from the inside antenna and leave them in the same place until the aiming is completed. Place the phone(s) on a table or other surface between 10 and 20 ft. The phone(s) should be in Field Test Mode so you can take decibel signal readings, which are more accurate than bars. One person will stay inside with a cell phone from each carrier that you want to support. To aim the antenna, you’ll ideally need two people.

To start, temporarily setup your signal booster system by running the cables through doors or windows, connect everything together, and power on the system. For example, if you need to aim your antenna North, you should mount the antenna on the North side of the building pointed away from it, not on the South side pointed over the building.Įven if you know exactly where your carrier’s tower is located, it’s still a good idea to go through this aiming process! The cell signal may not be coming directly from the tower either because of obstacles in the way (buildings, hills, etc.) or because the tower may not have an antenna aimed in your direction. Once you know what direction the antenna should be pointed, try to find a location on the building so that the antenna is pointed away from the building.

You should attempt to aim the antenna before deciding where to permanently mount it. Do not attempt to aim the antenna up over a roof or nearby obstacles. In almost all situations, the antenna should be level and even with the horizon. Being off by a little will still work just fine. Most directional antennas can cover about 15% of the horizon (between 50 and 60 degrees), so your aiming doesn’t have to be laser-precise. Here are some things to know ahead of time:
